Obtaining a car insurance quote is an annual ritual that's legally inescapable if you are a car owner.

Whether it's a case of hitting the Yellow Pages and the phone, or, increasingly these days, searching for a quote online, it pays to shop around. But all that legwork is daunting when there are literally hundreds of car insurance companies vying for your custom.

To make matters worse, the quotes you receive can vary wildly, often by as much as several hundred pounds.

So how to make sense of the tangled world of car insurance quote?

A good place to start is right here - but then we would say that, wouldn't we?

Okay, then. Put us to the test. Let us quote you.and you'll see the difference we can make.

Of course, like so much in life, cheapest is not always the best. And nowhere is this more true than in relation to car insurance.

Cheap car insurance may suit some drivers. Be aware, however, that there's no free lunch, these policies are generally inferior and do not offer the same scope of cover as other comprehensive policies. You pays your money, you accept the limitations.

To help the comparison process, let's look at some of the factors that will affect what you pay for car insurance:

Your vehicle - The age, model and engine size of your car is one of the main criteria used in calculating a premium. Generally speaking, a smaller, low powered car will be cheapest to insure.

Security - You get extra Brownie points if your vehicle is fitted with an alarm, immobiliser or tracker system. Keeping your car in a locked garage, or in off street parking, will also help to keep your premium down.

Annual mileage - Keep an accurate record of your annual mileage. If you do less than 6,000 per year, this will be taken into account when calculating your quote. Check consecutive M.o.T. certificates to get a benchmark of your mileage. The mileage when the test was carried out is always recorded. Remember to factor in changes in circumstances, such as extra drivers, or changing jobs, which can affect your annual mileage.

Number of drivers - Any driver policies are expensive. Named driver policies are cheaper, so only insure those drivers who regularly use your vehicle.

Age and medical history - These are important issues when determining how much you will pay. There's nothing you can do to improve your age.

Voluntary excess - You can help cut your premium by agreeing to pay a higher amount. The 'excess' is the amount you agree to pay towards settling a claim. If the claim is determined not to have been your fault, you will be refunded the excess.
